Fa Ngum was a great warrior, and between 13 he conquered territories that included all of present-day Laos and much of what is today northern and eastern Thailand. The Lao people, the predominant ethnic group in present-day Laos, are a branch of the Tai peoples who by the 8th century ce had established a powerful kingdom, Nanzhao, in southwestern China.
